All of the recipes found here at About Homemade Dog Treats.com come from a unique anthology of pet profile cookbooks called The Collaborative Canine. The books are published by a company called Collaborative Tails, Inc. Each book showcases pets from all over the world while providing pet owners with an extensive collection of doggie recipes that have been named after their pets. The recipes are not just for homemade dog treats. There are also dog food recipes (meals), dog cake recipes, wheat free treat recipes and grain free dog food recipes.
Each pet featured in the book also has a small pet biography and in same cases, their owners have written short stories about their pets. What’s even nicer is that a portion of all book sales are donated to animal welfare organizations. The first edition published featured North Shore Animals League America.
The first recipe features a Labrador Retriever named Hunter. Enjoy Hunter’s story as well as this recipe for Hunter’s Healthy Bones. Hunter just loves homemade dog treats!

Hunter was our wedding gift to each other. Hunter became a part of our family in June of 2003. My husband and I call Hunter our ― first born.
Hunter is 6 years old and still loves to run, run, run! What can I say, he’s a true Labrador Retriever. If you can throw it, he’ll chase it! He also LOVES to swim. My mother teases us and says, “At least someone uses my pool.” Hunter will swim in Grandma’s pool for hours! All he has to see is the beach bag full of towels and he’s waiting by the front door. He would get so excited about his trip to the pool that we had to figure out how to contain all of his energy from our house to my mom’s. Hunter would jump from the front seat, to the back seat throughout the entire ride. This was very distracting and dangerous too, so we decided to put his “house”, which is a large dog cage in the back of our truck and it has worked out great!
When we brought our son Kyle home from the hospital, Hunter was very curious about his new baby brother. He immediately began sniffing and then of course licking. We were so happy to see how well he interacted with the baby. This was a good thing because about a year and half later he received another baby brother; Aiden. Hunter is absolutely wonderful with both of our boys!
Now that Kyle is a little older he can actually play with Hunter. It’s a joy to watch the two of them play in the yard. Kyle throws him the ball and Hunter brings it back. Neither seem to get bored! We can’t imagine what life would be like without our dear Hunter!
