One of the biggest obstacles that I faced when I first started my dog treat business was advertising. Just like any new business, I knew that getting my name out there was half the battle. But how was I supposed to this?
Dog Treat Business From Home
Because my dog treat business was run completely from home, I didn’t have a store front that people could drive by and decide to stop in and take a look. My business was completely online and I really didn’t have a clue how to tackle online advertising. All I knew that online marketing was critical to the success of my business and if I was going to get customers I needed help with this right away.
So what did I do?
Well, I tried several things. I tell you what worked and what didn’t.
Link Exchanges- In the old days people used to do link exchanges, which is simply asking someone to put a link to your website on their website and in return you would link to their website from yours. I thought this was easy enough so I set out to get some links. All I did was surf the web for any kind of dog related websites and I would contact the webmaster and request a link swap. Sometimes people would say yes and sometimes they wouldn’t ever respond. So it was really hit or miss. Link exchanges used to help build your page rank and your business but nowadays they aren’t all that effective. I soon found this method a bit time consuming and decided to move onto something else.
Paid Advertising- there are tons of paid advertising opportunities available online. However, it’s important that you understand how a program works before you get involved.
Examples of paid advertising:
Google Adwords: I made the mistake of trying to use Google Adwords on my own. BIG mistake…I spent a ton of money and didn’t really achieve the goals that I was looking to. If you want to try this method of advertising, hire someone that knows what they are doing!!!
Pet Business Directory Websites: I also tried using some pet business business directory websites. These are basically websites that are set up for all types of pet business owners to promote their businesses. My results were OK. If you want to use any of these types of sites I would recommend trying this new free pet directory called PetCentricity.
There are also plenty of pet related websites that offer paid advertising in their sites. This is fine as long as the website gets a substantial amount of traffic. Otherwise you are wasting your money! There are plenty of ways to advertise your business online for free which brings me to my next point. If you already have an online dog bakery or you are looking to start a dog treat business then you need to keep reading.
Dog Treat Business Success Stories
A few years back I was contacted by someone who authored a pretty high traffic blog called Bunny Roo Beagle. She had come across my website and was impressed with what I was doing and wanted to showcase my website on her blog. Needless to say, I received a bunch of traffic from the link on her website and the best part about it was it was FREE! I’ll never forget this and feel like I need to pay the favor forward.
So, I’ve decided to create a featured dog treat business page on my blog to help like minded businesses owners advertise their business here for free.
