Dog Treat Business From Home
So maybe you have been making homemade dog treats for a while now and you think that you might want to turn your passion for dogs into a small business.
Good news! If you are one of those people thinking about starting your own dog treat business, you will be happy to know that your market is immense! According to research from a leading pet industry organization, the demand for services in the pet industry is higher than ever! And what’s even better… you can work from home!
I started my own online dog bakery called The Beggin’ Beagle Bakery in 2006. I do everything form the comfort of my own home!! This is great because I have three small children and I happen to live on Long Island where commercial real estate is very expensive! Rent alone would probably eat up most of my profits, and finding day care for my kids would cost and arm and leg too. So working from home is ideal for me and it can be for you too!
I don’t want to bore you with statistics but I thought the following information was worth sharing…
Consumer spending on pet care services and products, especially all natural dog treats and organic pet products, is at an all-time high. According to the industry’s American Pet Products Manufacturers Association (APPMA) one of the fastest growing niches is homemade dog treats and homemade dog food. If you need proof that a business or career in the pet treat industry can be a profitable choice for you, consider the following:
The APPMA released figures in April of 2010 proving that, at least in America, our passion for pets is more than just puppy love. While other industries suffer during weak economies, spending on pets and pet care services has more than doubled from $17 billion in 1994 to a whopping $47.7 billion for 2010. This is over 100 percent growth in the pet services industry.
To put that in perspective – that makes pet industry spending more than 50 percent larger than both the toy industry ($20 billion) and the candy industry ($23 billion).
Bob Vetere, APPMA COO and managing director, explains “As more and more people consider and treat pets like children, they’re purchasing pet products and pet services that you wouldn’t have typically seen our grandparents buying for their pets.”
“I don’t foresee people’s attitude toward their pets changing anytime soon,” said Vetere. “They’ll continue to buy pet products and services, which makes for happy manufacturers, retailers and of course, the furry, finned, and four-legged end consumers.”
Why Starting a Dog Treat Business Is Worth It
Although the US economy is the worst it has been in years, (well they say it’s recovering…) the pet industry seems to be unaffected. Along with the toy industry, the pet industry is still booming! According to the 2011-2012 APPA National Pet Owners Survey, 62% of U.S. households own a pet, which equates to 72.9 million homes. When I started my dog bakery business in 2006 Americans spent $38.5 million on their pets. This number has continued to rise over the last five years.
Total U.S. Pet Industry Expenditures
2017 $69.36 Estimated
2016 $66.75 billion
2015 $60.28 billion
2014 $58.04 billion
2013 $55.72 billion
2012 $52.87 billion
2011 $50.96 billion
2010 $48.35 billion
2009 $45.5 billion
2008 $43.2 billion
2007 $41.2 billion
2006 $38.5 billion
