Easy Homemade Peanut Butter Dog Biscuits

Some of the most popular homemade dog treats found at The Beggin’ Beagle Bakery are the dog breed treats. I started making these treats after I came across a Labrador Retriever cookie cutter that I ended up buying for my own dog. I made a bunch of Lab treats for one of his birthdays and one of my friends asked me if I could make a batch of Newfoundland treats for her pooch.

After finding cookie cutters in the shape of just about every breed of dog imaginable, I decided to create a line of dog breed treats at the bakery. Needless to say, they are a huge hit!

You can make these cute dog breed treats in all sorts of flavors. I used a recipe for homemade peanut butter dog biscuits when making the poodle treats because “peanut butter poodles” just sounded cute. If you want to try and make homemade peanut butter dog treats this is the perfect recipe to start with. It’s easy and used minimal ingredients.

I wrap these guys up all the time and use them as gifts. Take a look at these homemade peanut butter treats shaped like one of the most popular large dog breeds, the Newfoundland. As I mentioned earlier, a friend of mine requested these so I made them extra special by wrapping them up in this gift box. We have a 7 month old baby at home so using baby food in our homemade dog treats is not an issue:) A lot of people don’t like using baby food because they feel that it contains too much salt, sugar or other harmful ingredients. I think that if the food is safe enough for a baby to eat then it’s fine for my dog. I actually use the organic baby food which is made with all organic ingredients so I’m not worried at all. Unless your dog has an allergy or some other type of health condition, using baby food to make a dog biscuit is fine. Just choose your baby food wisely.

I have an event coming up in June so I have been busy working on some easy dog biscuit recipes peanut butter style that I can use for this show. Working at local craft fairs is actually how I started my business and it’s a great way to get your name out there. Because the event is rain or shine, I have to make sure that I choose my dog biscuit recipes carefully. Why? well, a lot of the homemade dog treats that I make will spoil after a short period of time, so I don’t want to be stuck with a ton of homemade dog treats that I can’t sell. Even though I have a website, you can’t predict what people will order, so it’s better to choose recipes that have a longer shelf life or that can be frozen and then used at a later date.

One of the best types of dog biscuit recipes to use in a situation such as mine is something with peanut butter. The salt that is naturally found in peanut butter acts as a nice preservative and allows you to keep this type of dog biscuit longer. It’s also a good idea to use oat flour. Oat flour has a decent shelf life and if you use it you will find that your homemade dog biscuits have a much better shelf life. So I’m going to share an easy recipe for oatmeal peanut butter dog treats.

Peanut butter oatmeal cookies for dogs have always been one of my best sellers, so this actually works out well:)

If you know how to make a dog treat then making peanut butter dog treats is probably something that you are already familiar with. when it comes to easy dog biscuit recipes peanut butter is always a popular flavor so I would imagine that most people have a little experience making them.

If not there is really only one thing that you have decided on and that’s what type of peanut butter you will use. A lot of people like to stay away from store bought brands like Skippy but I actually prefer them. Yes these types of peanut have a little more salt and sugar, but remember, you are making “treats” not dog food that you will be giving your dog everyday. A little salt and sugar won’t hurt… unless of course your dog has health issues. Not only does the peanut butter have a better taste, it’s much easier to work with. A lot of the natural peanut butter’s are hard and not very pliable. This is just my preference and it’s completely up to you when deciding on what type of peanut butter to use for your easy dog biscuit recipes made with peanut butter. If you have kids, making homemade dog treats is a great activity and you can certainly use this recipe if you are planning on baking with the kids. In fact, the last dog treat recipe that I shared with you guys was great for kids too. So sticking with this theme I’m sharing another one of my favorite easy biscuit recipes for kids to make.

Teaching your kids how to make homemade dog biscuits is a great opportunity to teach them several things. When you make doggie biscuits with your kids, you can teach them how to read a recipe, basic measurement skills, and more importantly nutrition. I also incorporate a little lesson on sharing and taking turns too. So if you think that teaching your kids how to make dog biscuits sounds like a fun afternoon activity, try the recipe for these homemade crunchy dog biscuits that your dog will love.

This particular recipe calls for shredded cheddar cheese, however you can always use powdered cheese too.

1 cup whole wheat flour

1 cup rye flour

1/2 cup water

2 tbsp. melted butter

1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese

* TIP *- We had unexpected visitors while we were in the middle of making these dog biscuits so i wrapped the dog biscuit dough in cellophane and stored it in the refrigerator until we were ready to use it. This is actually a great idea if you need to make a bunch of dog treats for an event but you don’t want them to go bad before the event arrives. I used to spend days just making tons of dog biscuit dough when I had a big craft fair coming up. This was really helpful because making the dough itself is a bit time consuming. It’s a easier to just pull out a bunch a ready made dough and then spend a day or two baking it.

So as you can see in the video below this is an awesome and easy dog biscuit recipe for kids. My boys get such a kick out making homemade dog biscuits for our dog and he’s just thrilled when they make them!

Before we went to bed last night my son asked me if we could make Hunter (our dog) s0me home baked dog treats in the morning. I thought this was so cute:)

Making quick and easy dog biscuit recipes has become quite a popular activity in my house this winter. Teaching your kids how to make dog treats really is a lot of fun. Plus your dog will thrilled that you decided to do so! So if you are looking for some easy homemade dog treats recipes that you can make with your kids, this homemade dog biscuits recipe is perfect for you!

Simple Dog Biscuit Recipe

quick and easy dog biscuit recipesIngredients:

1 cup oatmeal

1 cup  cup rye flour

2 tbsp. brown sugar

1 tbsp. melted butter

1/2 cup almond milk

Directions: Preheat the oven to 350°F and lightly grease a cookie sheet. Combine the oatmeal, rye flour, brown sugar, and melted butter in a mixing bowl.  Gradually add the milk. Blend until dough forms. Flour a flat surface and knead the dough mixture.  Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for one hour. Sprinkle some rye flour on your flat surface (cutting board or counter top), and roll out the dough to approximately 1/4 inch in thickness. Use cookie cutters to cut the dough into shapes and place them on the cookie sheet. Bake the biscuits for 15 minutes.  Turn off the oven and allow the biscuits to cool in the oven with the door closed.  Once the biscuits are cooled, remove from the baking sheet and store in an airtight container.

Here is the video that I made today to show you exactly how to make these quick and easy dog biscuit recipes. Just a few pointers that I make in the video…

  • don’t roll the dough to thin. The oatmeal in the dough makes it break apart easily so the thicker it is the better.
  • you might want to use a metal spatula to get the treats off of the counter and onto the baking sheet. Again, the dough will break easily so using a spatula will help keep it together.
  • you can always leave the dog biscuits in the oven for a few more minutes after you turn the heat off. It allows them to dry out a bit more making them a crunchier treat!

Although I still think that making healthy homemade dog treats for your pet is the best way to go, I know that there are a lot of you who just don’t have the time or perhaps the patience to do so. Regardless of the reason why, rather than making homemade dog treats at home, you can still get your hands on some healthy dog treats if you know what to look for.

So where can you get healthy dog treats for your pooch and how do you know how to choose them?

How To Choose The Healthiest Dog Treats

If you are unable to find the time or just aren’t interested in using recipes for healthy dog treats to make at home you can always purchase some healthy dog snacks at a pet store. If you have a small local pet shop that you can visit that’s great but if not you can always go to one of the bigger chain stores like Petco. While there is nothing like a healthy homemade dog treat made in your own kitchen, there are some brands that I would recommend if you can’t make your own healthy dog treats at home.

Healthy Dog Treats Reviews

So what if you just don’t have the time to make your pet healthy dog treats at home? What should you buy instead? Well, there are a lot of pet products out there that claim to be all natural and healthy for your pets, however, it’s really important that you read the label on any pet product before you buy it. More importantly, make sure you know how to read a label too.

Blue buffalo dog treats, Blue Buffalo Health Bars

My mom is the type of person who wants to feed her dog wholesome dog food and healthy dog treats, but she just doesn’t have the time to do so. So, she buys her pup BLUE dog food. BLUE pet foods and treats consist of all natural ingredients blended in the perfect combination for superior nutrition. All of the high-quality ingredients serve as the foundation of all of their products. What else? Well, these products are also filled intensively researched vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Each combination of pet food or pet treats is specifically modified for dogs, cats, lifestages, weight conditions, taste preference, and personal feeding choice.

Like us, dogs and cats require a balanced diet that is a combination of six nutrient classes. BLUE products contain all 6:

  • Proteins
  • Fats
  • Carbohydrates
  • Vitamins
  • Minerals
  • Water

BLUE pet products pride themselves on making pet products that are well balanced with all of the above. More importantly, they also take pride in what IS NOT found in their pet products and I think it’s important to share this with you.

What’s Not In BLUE and Why

While the high-quality ingredients we include in BLUE are the foundation of our healthy, holistic diet, what we choose not to include is of equal importance.

There are many ingredients that are considered less than desirable by pet parents who want to feed their dog or cat with the same care as a family member. Surprisingly, when you look at dog food and cat food labels, you’ll see some of these ingredients in many of the leading pet food brands – but not in BLUE.

  • Chicken or Poultry By-Product Meals
  • Corn, Wheat or Soy Proteins (Glutens)
  • Artificial Colors, Flavors, or Preservatives

So, if you aren’t able to utilze some of the healthy dog treat recipes found on my website or other resources, I would have to recommend going with BLUE healthy dog treats. Check out these guys…they love them!
